  • Proposal: Lecture-and-Performance Series - Kabuki Henge-mono Dances from the Bunka-Bunsei Era (1804-1830) as a Living Museum of Premodern Japan

    Objective

To offer audiences an educational opportunity for appreciating traditional Japanese dance as a window to the past and a tool to learn Japanese history.

    Goals

    (1) To cultivate audiences' interests in and respect for non-Western performing art forms to broaden their artistic experience (2) To initiate an effort to present non-Western performing art forms by trained professional artists as art, as opposed to cultural or ethnic entertainment Kazuko Kaya Yamazaki, Ph.

    Impact

This proposed project would be the first-ever Japanese dance performance series where the audience gets to see ten famous traditional pieces performed by a trained professional without abridgment, each with an enlightening pre-performance lecture.

In this region, opportunities to see live performances of traditional Japanese dance are limited to cultural festivals. A main purpose of cultural festivals is to give a taste of culture, and accordingly, dances presented for such occasions are abridged versions performed by dance students. Spectators never have the opportunity to see a professional perform traditional dance as it is performed in Japan.
