    Queen Elizabeth's husband Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, has died. He was 99-years-old.

    "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh," reads a statement released by the royal family this morning.

    "His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will be made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss."

    With 70 years in the public eye, Prince Philip is the longest-serving royal consort in British history. However, while his adult life was one of privilege and duty, the Prince’s childhood was marked by a tragedy and loneliness.

    A Peripatetic Childhood

    Born on the Greek Island of Corfu on June 10, 1921, to Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg, Philip was sixth in line to the Greek throne.     Born in Corfu, Greece in 1921, Prince Philip was a member of the Greek and Danish royal families.
