Nuel EmmonsNuel Emmons, 75, of Nice, passed away after a long illness on November 19, 2002, at Sutter Lakeside Hospital.And even though this column is titled obituaries Nuel, or better known as Gramps, hasn’t ceased to exist, but rather moved on to a bigger and better place where he can continue to love and help all of those he had touched throughout the 75 years of his life. Nuel’s versatile and caring personality allowed him to become close to every person whom he met and he will be deeply missed by everybody. From running up and down the sidelines of high school football games, to enjoying a game of golf with such athletes as Tiger Woods and Craig Stadler, to enjoying a day on the lake, Nuel loved every aspect of his life especially his family.Nuel was born in Ada, Oklahoma, attended school in Richmond, CA and moved to Nice in the late 1960’s with his wife Bette Emmons and her two sons. There he owned his own auto body repair business until he earned enough money to fund his desire; to be a writer/photographer. Nuel wrote several articles while following the P.G.A. tour which were published in various golf magazines. In 1988 he published his own book, a New York Times best seller, entitled ‘Manson in his own Words

Manson In His Own Words was a little bit helpful. Honestly, I don't know how much of it is accurate. The author Nuel Emmons says himself that he did not have a tape recorder or pencil or paper during the conversations, so he had to go by memory, writing things down when he returned to his car. That alone tells me that there is probably more of Mr. Emmons thoughts' or feelings than Charlie.
Reading about his childhood was heartbreaking. Imagine your own mother trading you as a child for a pitcher of beer. Your own mother turning you over to the courts because she didn't want to take care of you. Being in foster homes, reform schools and jail since you were twelve years old. Being abused in those places mentally, physically and sexually. How can that not have a negative effect on anyone?
