Nigel Havers is one of Britain's best known actors, mainly for his many roles on television since the s. He was born as the younger son of Michael Havers, QC, a Conservative MP for Wimbledon, Attorney General (), and Lord High Chancellor of England ().
After a private education, Havers attended a drama school attached to the Oxford Playhouse and at the same time worked in university productions, always in revues and comedies. He appeared in "Twelfth Night" in a revue at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which transferred to London where it was seen by an American director who took the show to the States.
Havers' starring roles on British television have included series such as Nicholas Nickleby (), A Horseman Riding By (), Don't Wait Up (), The Charmer (), and Dangerfield (). He has also made notable guest appearances in cult series such as The Sarah Jane Adventures () and The Life of Rock with Brian Pern (), and played the regular role of Lewis Archer in the soap opera Coronation Street ().

Although Nigel Havers is most often associated with dashing cads, his career has encompassed its share of benevolent characters, not least the two for which he is probably best remembered: Olympic athlete Lord Andrew Lindsay in Chariots of Fire (d. Hugh Hudson, ) and lovable loser Tom Latimer in the long-running sitcom Don't Wait Up (BBC, ).
Born into a long line of lawyers, he opted instead for an acting career after seeing Peter O'Toole's stage Hamlet. His film debut came with an improbable role as a monk in Pope Joan (d. Michael Anderson, ), but television work was irregular until an appearance in Upstairs Downstairs (ITV, tx. 30/11/). In he took the lead in a BBC adaptation of Nicholas Nickleby (BBC, ), and the following year played a memorably oily door-to-door salesman in Pennies from Heaven (BBC, ).
Chariots of Fire was followed by roles in A Passage to India (d. David Lean, ) and Steven Spielberg's Empire of the Sun (US, ), but a career in films somehow failed to materialise. However, he continued to work regularly on the small screen, enjoying enormous popularity as a result of Don't Wait Up, in which he played a divorced doctor co-habiting with his recently separated father (Tony Britton).
