Narendra Modi Stadium History – Narendra Modi Stadium, formerly known as Motera Cricket Stadium, designed the largest cricket stadium in the world; in Ahmedabad, India. The project, home to the Gujarat Cricket Association, was built in collaboration with India’s leading contractors, Larsen & Toubro.

The Challenge Spanning 63 hectares, the 110,000-seat stadium more than doubles the capacity of the old stadium and holds 10,000 more than Australia’s iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground. The scope of the project presented its own challenges in providing a completely unobstructed view of the field for each of the 110,000 seats. The time frame was another challenge for the design team. Despite its size, the stadium will be built within three years. It includes 76 corporate boxes, four team dressing rooms and facilities, state-of-the-art club facilities with three training pitches, an indoor cricket academy and an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

Innovation. Each of the 110,000 seats has an unobstructed view of the field and playing field, and the intentionally round open stadium offering 360-degree views ensures that spectators are part of the action.

AHMEDABAD, INDIA— Narendra Modi Stadium (commonly known as Motera Stadium) is poised to become the world’s largest cricket stadium following its inauguration in February 2020. The stadium will accommodate over 110,000 (1.1 Lakh) cricket fans, surpassing its preceding record holder, Melbourne Cricket Ground. After two years of demolition, the new facility is completing construction on the same 63-acre site as its predecessor, Sardar Patel Stadium—which will be its official name after opening.

Modi Stadium responds to the vision of Shri. Narendra Modi, the Honorable Prime Minister of India, doubling the capacity of the previous venue. Despite its size, the stadium was constructed in three years. The new home of the Gujarat Cricket Association includes 76 corporate boxes, four team dressing rooms and facilities, state-of-the-art club facilities with three practice grounds, an indoor cricket academy, and a 55-room clubhouse which will have an Olympic-size swimming pool.
